Bed bugs are the one pest where acting within days rather than weeks changes how much the treatment costs and how much of your furniture survives.

They breed quickly, they hide in places you would never spray, and they travel between rooms and apartments through skirting gaps and shared walls.

How to be sure it is bed bugs

Bites alone are not proof, because people react to them very differently and some do not react at all.

What confirms an infestation is physical evidence around where you sleep.

Look for small dark spots on the mattress seams and bed frame, which are digested blood and smear when wiped with a damp cloth.

Look for the pale, papery skins the nymphs shed as they grow, usually collected in the same seams and crevices.

Look for the insects themselves, which are flat, oval, reddish brown and about the size of an apple seed when adult.

A strong, sweet, musty smell in a room that is otherwise clean is another sign of a well established population.

One thing worth knowing early: bed bugs are not known to transmit disease. The real damage is sleep loss, skin reactions from scratching, the cost of replacing furniture, and how fast they spread if the response is delayed.

Where they actually hide

Treating the mattress alone is the most common reason an infestation comes back.

Bed bugs spend most of their time off the host, tucked into anything with a tight crack near where someone sleeps.

The usual harbourages are mattress and box spring seams, the joints and screw holes of the bed frame, the headboard and the wall behind it, bedside tables and drawer runners, the underside of upholstered furniture, curtain hems, loose skirting boards, and the edges of wallpaper or wall panels.

In apartments they also move along shared services, so an untreated neighbouring unit can reinfest a flat that was cleared properly.

Heat treatment and chemical treatment

There are two proven approaches, and the right one depends on the property and the severity.

Heat treatment raises the room to a temperature lethal to every life stage, including the eggs, which is its main advantage. It normally clears an infestation in a single session and needs no drying time, and it suits situations where you cannot be without the room for long.

Chemical treatment uses approved residual products applied precisely into the harbourages. It costs less, and the residue keeps working on insects that emerge later, but eggs are far less susceptible so a follow-up visit is part of the plan rather than a sign something went wrong.

Many properties do best on a combination, with heat where the concentration is worst and residual treatment across the surrounding harbourages.

Why one visit is often not the whole job

A female bed bug lays eggs steadily, and those eggs hatch on their own schedule regardless of what was sprayed the week before.

That biology is the reason a serious infestation is scheduled as a treatment plus a follow-up, timed so the newly hatched insects meet the treatment before they can breed.

Any company promising permanent elimination from a single chemical visit is describing marketing rather than the life cycle.

Preparing for treatment

Good preparation raises the success rate and shortens the whole process.

Strip the beds and wash all bedding and affected clothing on the hottest cycle the fabric allows, then tumble dry it, because heat is what kills the eggs.

Bag the washed items and keep them sealed until the treatment is complete so they cannot be reinfested.

Pull furniture away from the walls where you can, and empty bedside drawers so the technician can treat the runners and joints.

Vacuum the room thoroughly, then seal and dispose of the vacuum bag outside the property immediately.

Do not start spraying retail insecticides before the visit, because repellent products scatter the population into new harbourages and make the professional treatment harder.

Bed bugs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

We treat both emirates, and the pattern of calls differs between them.

In Dubai the volume comes from apartments, hotel rooms and short-term rentals, where turnover of guests and shared building services move infestations between units.

In Abu Dhabi we see more villa and staff-accommodation work, where a single untreated room can seed the rest of the building over a few months.

What to do right now

Do not move to another room or the sofa to sleep, because that is the single most effective way to spread an infestation through the home. Bed bugs follow the sleeper.

Do not throw the mattress out yet, since a treated mattress is usually salvageable and a discarded one carries the problem into the corridor.

Keep any items you have already bagged sealed, and stop moving belongings between rooms.
