Effective mosquito control in Dubai starts with finding where they breed, and only then treating where they fly.

A blocked drain, an untended pool or a saucer under a plant pot can keep producing mosquitoes week after week, and fogging alone will never outpace that supply while the water stays there.

The real mosquito risk in Dubai is dengue

Many pest control pages in the UAE still list malaria among the dangers of local mosquitoes.

That is out of date. The World Health Organization certified the UAE malaria free in 2007, and no locally transmitted case has been recorded since 1997.

Dengue is the risk that actually matters here, and there is now solid local evidence behind it.

After dengue activity rose following the heavy rainfall of April 2024, researchers ran a full year of mosquito surveillance across Dubai, sampling sixty locations from the city out to Hatta.

They collected 1,598 Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and detected dengue virus in five of the tested pools, with the results published by the CDC journal Emerging Infectious Diseases in August 2026.

In plain terms, the mosquito that carries dengue is established in Dubai, and a share of the population is carrying the virus.

That is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to take standing water on your property seriously.

Two very different mosquitoes, two very different treatments

Knowing which mosquito is biting you changes what the treatment has to do.

Aedes aegypti bites during the day, often around the ankles, and prefers small containers of relatively clean water. Plant saucers, discarded lids, blocked roof gutters, air conditioning drip trays and forgotten buckets are all it needs, and a container the size of a teacup is enough.

Because it breeds in dozens of tiny places rather than one big one, an Aedes problem is solved by systematic searching, not by volume of chemical.

Culex is the classic evening and night biter with the whine that wakes you up. It prefers dirtier, more stagnant water, so drains, sumps, irrigation channels, water features and neglected pools are the usual sources.

A property can easily have both, which is why our inspection covers the containers and the drainage in the same visit.

Why mosquito pressure in the UAE follows the rain

Warm weather alone does not create a mosquito problem, because eggs still need water to hatch in.

What changes the picture in the Emirates is rainfall. Heavy rain fills every container and low point at once, and the mosquito population rises sharply about one to two weeks later as those larvae mature.

That pattern is well documented here. Dengue activity climbed after the April 2024 floods, national teams cleared more than four hundred breeding sites in the campaign that followed, and the UAE issued a public mosquito warning again after the wet weather in December 2025.

The practical lesson for property owners is to walk the grounds within a few days of any real rain, because that short window is when a season’s worth of breeding gets decided.

How professional mosquito treatment works

A proper programme runs on four stages, and skipping any one of them is why some treatments stop working after a fortnight.

Inspection and breeding site mapping. Our technician walks the property looking for standing water in containers, drains, sumps, roof gutters, air conditioning trays, water features and irrigation runs, and records each source so it can be checked again on the follow up.

Source reduction and larviciding. Anything that can be emptied or drained is dealt with on the spot. Water that has to stay, such as ornamental features and permanent sumps, is treated with a larvicide that stops the larvae reaching adulthood without harming the surroundings.

Adult knockdown. Fogging, ULV misting or targeted residual spraying clears the mosquitoes already flying, which is the part you notice first because the biting stops.

Residual barrier and follow up. A residual treatment on the shaded resting surfaces where mosquitoes wait out the heat, such as dense planting, walls and under furniture, keeps working after the fog has cleared. A follow up visit confirms the mapped sites are still clear.

Why fogging on its own is not enough

Fogging is genuinely useful, and it is the fastest way to make an outdoor space usable again before an event or a weekend.

What it cannot do is reach the water where the next generation is growing.

If a treatment is sold as fogging alone and nothing is done about the breeding sources, the relief usually lasts one to two weeks and then the biting returns, because the larvae that were already in the water simply matured on schedule.

Any programme worth paying for treats the water and the air in the same plan.

Villas, apartments and commercial properties

Villas carry the highest risk in Dubai because they combine irrigation, planting, pools and outdoor drainage. Garden lighting and dense shrubs also give adult mosquitoes the shaded daytime shelter they need, so villa treatment usually pairs breeding site work with a residual barrier through the landscaping.

Apartments are usually suffering from something outside the flat. Balcony plant saucers, air conditioning drainage, shared podium landscaping and building drainage are the common culprits, so the fix often involves both the unit and a conversation with building management.

Restaurants, hotels and facilities need mosquito control that fits food safety and guest experience requirements, which means documented visits, treatments that are safe around food preparation areas, and scheduling around service hours.

What you can do this week

Most residential mosquito problems shrink substantially once these are handled.

Empty and scrub plant saucers, buckets and pet bowls rather than just tipping them, because Aedes eggs stick to the sides and survive drying.

Check the air conditioning drip tray and condensate outlet, which is one of the most commonly missed sources in UAE homes.

Clear roof gutters and any low point that holds water after a wash down or rain.

Keep pools circulating and treated, and cover or drain anything sitting idle.

Fit or repair window and balcony screens, and check the mesh around air conditioning penetrations where mosquitoes get in unnoticed.

Walk the property within a few days of heavy rain and repeat the checks above.
