If you have seen one cockroach in daylight, there are more you have not seen.

Cockroaches are nocturnal and stay hidden while the population is small, so a daytime sighting usually means the harbourages are already crowded enough to push individuals out.

GRMC treats cockroach infestations in homes, kitchens, restaurants and warehouses across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and the treatment starts by identifying which species you actually have, because the two common ones need completely different work.

German or American: it changes the whole treatment

Almost every cockroach problem in the UAE is one of two species, and telling them apart is the single most useful thing you can do before calling anyone.

The German cockroach is small, around 12 to 15 mm, light brown, with two dark stripes running down the back of the head. It lives indoors permanently and it is the one that infests kitchens. It hides in the warm cavities near appliances: behind the fridge motor, under the dishwasher, inside cupboard hinges, in the gap behind kitchen units, and inside coffee machines and microwaves. A female carries her egg case until it is almost ready to hatch, which is why populations climb so quickly and why spraying alone rarely finishes them.

The American cockroach is much larger, 35 to 40 mm, reddish brown, and it flies. It does not usually live in your kitchen. It comes up from drains, manholes, service ducts and garden voids, so you tend to see it at night on floors, in bathrooms, or near a floor drain. Finding one does not mean your home is infested; it usually means a drain route needs sealing.

Getting this wrong wastes money. Treating an American cockroach entry problem with kitchen gel does nothing, and treating a German cockroach infestation with perimeter spray scatters it.

Why we bait rather than spray kitchens

The instinct is to spray, and for German cockroaches that instinct makes the problem worse.

Repellent sprays drive the population out of the harbourage you found and into ones you have not, often into neighbouring cupboards or the adjoining apartment.

Gel bait works the opposite way. The cockroaches feed on it and carry the active back into the harbourage, where it reaches the ones you can never see, including the nymphs.

It also means we do not need you to empty your kitchen. Gel goes into cracks, hinges, and appliance cavities in small precise placements rather than across the surfaces where you prepare food.

What the treatment involves

The inspection decides everything, so it comes first.

Our technician checks the warm cavities around appliances, under sinks, behind kick boards, inside cupboard hinges and around any floor drain, looking for live insects, shed skins, egg cases and the dark specks that mark a harbourage.

Gel bait then goes into those specific locations. Where the source is a drain or void, we treat the entry route and advise on sealing it, because a treatment that ignores the entry point buys you a few weeks.

A follow-up visit is normal for anything beyond a light infestation, timed to catch the nymphs that hatch after the first treatment.

For food businesses we document what was found and what was applied, which is what a Dubai Municipality inspection will ask to see.

What you should and should not do first

Do not spray retail insecticide before the visit. It is the single most common reason a professional treatment underperforms, because it scatters the population and contaminates the surfaces where bait needs to go.

Do not deep clean the kitchen the day before, for the same reason: bait placed on freshly bleached surfaces is less attractive than the grease the cockroaches are already feeding on.

Do fix leaks under sinks and behind appliances, since German cockroaches need water more urgently than food.

Do empty and clean the gap behind and under the fridge, which is the most reliably infested spot in a UAE kitchen.

Do keep food sealed and bins closed, and take cardboard out of the property, because cardboard is both harbourage and how infestations arrive from deliveries.

Kitchens, restaurants and apartment buildings

In a restaurant the problem is rarely just yours. Shared extraction, service ducts and delivery cardboard move German cockroaches between units in the same building, so a treatment that stops at your door tends to be temporary.

The same is true in apartments. If your neighbour has an untreated kitchen, expect recurrence, and tell us when you book so we can advise the building management.
