Pest Control in Al Reem Island

Most pest control on Al Reem Island happens in apartment towers, and there the problem is rarely confined to one flat. Cockroaches, ants and bed bugs use the chutes, risers and drains that link one floor to the next, so a useful visit looks at those shared routes as well as your kitchen and bathrooms. What drives pests on Al Reem Island

In the early 2000s the island was, as The National put it, “an expanse of sand surrounded by nothing but mangroves and the waters of the Arabian Gulf”. It is now home to “scores of high-rise towers”, and that density decides most of the pest work here.

• Shared services in the towers. Garbage chutes, bin rooms, service risers and drain stacks connect every floor of a building. German cockroaches settle in warm kitchen cupboards and appliance recesses and spread along those routes, while the larger American cockroach usually comes up from drains and bin areas. If neighbours on other floors are seeing them too, ask building management when the common areas were last treated.
• Watered green space. Aldar’s plan for Shams Abu Dhabi laid out more than 23 km of walkways, 3,650 m of promenades and a 2.4 km canal crossed by ten bridges, and the one-million-square-foot Reem Central Park adds a community lawn, a canal walk and a city beach. The irrigated planting along all of it keeps the soil damp at ground and podium level, which suits ants and gives adult mosquitoes shade to rest in.
• Food outlets beside homes. Aldar describes Reem Central Park as a retail promenade with apartments and offices set around it, and the park opened with its own restaurants. Where restaurant bins and grease traps sit close to residential entrances, they attract cockroaches, flies and rats, which then look for a way into the building next door.
• Villa gardens. Reem Hills, a gated villa community developed by Q Properties around a man-made hill, brings garden plots to an island of apartments. With them come the usual villa problems: rats along boundary walls and ants in the planted beds, plus mosquitoes wherever irrigation water is left standing.

On a tower balcony, the mosquito source is usually small and close by, such as a plant saucer, a blocked balcony drain or an air conditioning drip tray. Emptying and clearing those does more than spraying the balcony.

How a visit works on Al Reem Island

Towers and gated communities on the island set their own rules for contractors, so ask your building management before the visit what it needs from us. Some want the technicians’ names in advance, some issue a work permit, and some ask for the service lift to be booked. Give us the building name and unit number when you book so we can arrange it. Public health pest control work in the emirate is permitted by the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), which publishes no register of permit holders, so ask any company, us included, to show you its ADPHC work permit.

A proper apartment visit starts with the kitchen, the bathrooms, floor drains and the gaps where pipes pass through walls under the sinks. Gel bait goes into cupboard hinges and appliance recesses, where German cockroaches hide. Before anything is applied, ask for the product names and their safety data sheets, with written re-entry times for children and pets. The treatment is followed by a scheduled follow-up visit, because baits and residual treatments take time to work and the second visit shows whether they have.
